VMware Expands VMware vCloud Developer Ecosystem with Open-Source Java and Python SDKs for VMware vCloud API

VMware, Inc. (NYSE: VMW), the global leader in virtualization solutions from the desktop through the datacenter and to the cloud, today announced availability of both Java and Python open-source software development kits (SDKs) for the  VMware vCloud API, making it easier for developers and independent software vendors (ISVs) to jumpstart their projects by flexibly leveraging private and public cloud services.  The new Python and Java SDKs for the VMware vCloud API will further simplify and accelerate developers’ ability to leverage VMware vCloud services. VMware partners Cloudera and WebAppVM also announced new solutions for VMware vCloud Express developed with the VMware vCloud API and the SDKs.

“We are working aggressively to expand the VMware vCloud ecosystem and accelerate market availability of open-source client libraries for the VMware vCloud API,” said Dan Chu, vice president, cloud infrastructure and services, VMware. “Our ISV community has embraced our investment in the VMware vCloud Initiative and is integrating key solutions as part of innovative services from VMware vCloud Express providers such as Terremark.”

Key open-source client libraries and tools for the VMware vCloud API are now available from standard cloud software resources including Dasein, jclouds and libcloud, underscoring the strong interest from the open-source community in supporting the VMware vCloud Initiative. These new libraries and tools will help make the VMware vCloud API more accessible to a large and diverse set of developers, ISVs and solution partners. For ISVs, these libraries combined with the VMware vCloud API are standardizing and simplifying the integration path to public clouds offered through VMware vCloud Express providers.

Cloudera is an active libcloud contributor and uses libcloud in its Hadoop offering for VMware vCloud Express, and WebAppVM leverages jclouds for its VMware vCloud Express solution. The Cloudera Distribution for Hadoop allows users to store, integrate and analyze data inexpensively and easily by leveraging VMware vCloud Express and the VMware vCloud API to dynamically provision resources, process jobs and deprovision resources. The WebAppVM solution enables users to configure and scale a platform-as-a-service (PaaS) offering on VMware vCloud Express so they can rapidly on-board and monitor cloud-based applications.

“We have adapted our Hadoop scripts to leverage libcloud for VMware vCloud Express so our customers can realize maximum value and achieve superior performance,” said Amr Awadallah, CTO, Cloudera. “VMware vCloud solutions support the Open Virtualization Format (OVF) standard, which gives our customers investment protection, flexibility and simplified integration. And the VMware vCloud API helps our customers avoid getting locked into a single service provider. In fact, the VMware vCloud API gives enterprises the freedom to run Hadoop easily in private and public clouds.”

Other open-source tools are also VMware vCloud-enabled through the jclouds plugin. Ant, an open-source Java build tool, leverages this plugin to enable open-source tools and the developer ecosystem to gain access to the VMware vCloud API. Developers using Apache Maven, a software project management and comprehension tool, can also use the jclouds plugin to extend their existing projects to VMware vCloud Express.  All these tools are ready for developers to use in their standard workflows and leverage VMware vCloud Express. VMware has also made a number of open-source contributions to the Cloud Tools project, which powers the SpringSource Cloud Foundry service, enabling Java developers to deploy, test, and manage applications for VMware environments via VMware vSphere™ and the VMware vCloud API.

Comptia Security+ Article on Firewall Security Advantages and Firewall Functions.

The firewall protects an internal network from malicious hackers or software on an external network. Firewalls filter potentially harmful incoming or outgoing traffic. Firewalls are used to subdivide internal networks on the Internet. It also protects individual computers. The five services that firewalls provide are packet filtering, application filtering, proxy server, circuit-level, and stateful inspection.

• Packet Filtering: A packet filtering firewall checks each packet crossing the device. It also inspects the packet headers of all network packets going through the firewall.

Source IP Address: It identifies the host that is sending the packet. Attackers can modify this field in an attempt to conduct IP spoofing. Firewalls are configured to reject packets that arrive at the external interface, that is either an erroneous host configuration or an attempt at IP spoofing.

Destination IP Address: This is the IP address that the packet is trying to reach.

IP Protocol ID: Each IP header has a protocol ID that follows. For example, Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) is ID 6, User Datagram Protocol (UDP) is ID 17, and Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) is ID 1.

Fragmentation Flags: Firewalls examine and forward or reject fragmented packets. A successful fragmentation attack can allow an attacker to send packets that could compromise an internal host.

IP Options Setting: This field is used for diagnostics. The firewall is configured to drop network packets that use this field. Attackers can use this field in conjunction with IP spoofing to redirect network packets to their systems.

• Application Filtering: This device will intercept connections and performs security inspections. The firewall acts as a proxy for connections between the internal and external network. The firewall enforce access control rules specific to the application. It is also use to check incoming e-mails for virus attachments. These firewalls are often called e-mail gateways.

• Proxy Server: A proxy server takes on responsibility for providing services between the internal and external network. Proxy server can be used to hide the addressing scheme of the internal network. It can also be used to filter requests based on the protocol and address requested.

• Circuit-Level: A circuit-level firewall controls TCP and UDP ports, but doesn’t watch the data transferred over them. If a connection is established, the traffic is transferred without any further checking.

• Stateful Inspection: An inspection firewall works at the Network layer. It assesses the IP header information. It also monitors the state of each connection. Connections are rejected if they attempt any actions that are not standard for the given protocol. These listed firewall features can be implemented in combination by a given firewall implementation. Placing a lot of firewalls in series is a common practice to increase security at the network perimeter.
